How can Pregnancy massage help me?

Most women will find that at some point during their pregnancy they suffer one of the symptoms listed above. At HeadStart Massage we are able to help with any of the listed symptoms however we find that there are normally 3 key areas where massage is especially effective

    1. 1. Posture

    2. 2. Circulation

    3. 3. Stress Relief/Relaxation

    Posture

During pregnancy women may put on somewhere between 30-40lbs. This weight gain is normal but can cause problems with posture. As the baby grows the majority of weight becomes located around the abdominal area therefore putting the lower back under increased pressure. As pregnancy continues the ligaments of the pelvis loosen to prepare for birth however this also creates further strain on the back. Mothers may find that pain develops in the shoulders or neck due to the increasing weight and instability in the lower back.

Targeted massage can help relieve some of the tension and fatigue felt by mothers. A variety of techniques can be used to alleviate all types of pain caused by the changing posture throughout pregnancy. During your first appointment your therapist will discuss with you any problem areas that you have allowing you to receive the most effective and relaxing massage possible.

    Circulation

During pregnancy the mother’s volume of blood can increase by up to 50%. This easily leads to swelling of the hands or ankles. Massage can be used to directly affect the mother’s circulation. Using broad sweeping strokes your therapist can assist with the removal of fluid and waste products in swollen areas helping to prevent fatigue.

Pregnancy massage can help ease the load on the mother’s heart caused by the increase in blood volume. By assisting local and general circulation massage can help bring more oxygen and nutrients to the cells of both mother and baby. The result is less fatigue for mother and better nourishment for the baby.

An expectant mother experiences a huge variation in the hormone levels throughout her pregnancy. Massage can help to balance out hormone levels both during and after pregnancy.

    Relaxation/Stress Relief

Pregnancy can be a very emotional experience. In addition to the fluctuations in hormone levels there is often a lot to get ready in preparation for the birth. Massage can be particularly useful in the last few weeks of pregnancy to ensure that the mother does not become overly stressed during this busy time. Massage is also beneficial for the baby. The unborn baby can be affected by the mother’s stress levels. Relaxed mothers are more likely to have a relaxed pregnancy and birth.
